I am back to babysitting the family that I've watched for a couple years now three days a week. So far this school year is really fun... The older girl decided to quit ice hockey and is playing volleyball. I love volleyball and HATE HATE HATED having to drive to ice hockey. The equipment bags are enormous, the gear and locker rooms STINK, and 9 and 10 year old girls can't lace up their skates on their own so any adult in the locker room had to help at least 3 kids get ready for practice. Oh and the coach's daughter was a brat.
They are also doing cross country, soccer, football, and lacrosse, so it is busy!
Last night the girls were at soccer and I was home with the boy, helping him get homework finished. The first unit they're doing in math this year is sort of an intro to geometry... I'm pretty sure the color drained from my face on Tuesday when he asked me what a rhombus is. "Uhhhh... You know I can't give you the answer... Where's your book?" ha.
Last night there were a bunch of shapes and a series of word problems... The last question was "which of the shapes contains no right angles and no angles larger than a right angle?"
I do better with drawing out my explanations, so to help him figure it out I started with "okay, draw a right angle."
He drew a perfect right angle.
Next: "okay so what makes that a right angle?"
"Uhhhh...."
(thinking to myself oh hell how do I rephrase this question to make sense?)
"Do you know what a 90 degree angle is?"
"yeah, it's like that" (points to 90 degree angle)
"okay, awesome, so what would be something that is NOT a right angle?"
"A left angle?"
In summary: No, teachers don't get paid enough. Especially fourth grade boys math teachers.
