He's here he's here!

He's tall, he's blonde, he's of German descent...

Meet Dirk Nowoofzki the Great Dane!!!!!

See the resemblance?

 His namesake, duh.

Brought him home today. He is as sweet as can be.

He has to wear the cone thing on his head a few more weeks and then 4-5 months of taping so that his ears stand up tall and pretty like his mommas. The breeder cropped the ears because she was going to show him and cropping is pretty standard for show Danes, although it's becoming acceptable to leave them natural (like Elle's were). And I love how they look. And no I don't care if you think it's cruel.

Housebreaking and crate training and leash walking and all that other puppy stuff is going to be a whipping, but he's so sweet. We are already having lots of fun. :)

Will try to take some better pics on my nice camera, but just wanted to post these for now!

  8. Cutest puppy ever! And, cutest name ever! If you don't mind, what breeder did you get him from? I'm looking into getting a Great Dane, too! =)

  10. well it is cruel and you should care. exactly how is it that you don't care? I'm curious. granted, if his ears were cropped for show (that's still cruel, but understandable) and you just happened to get him and you hadn't made that comment, no one would think twice. but, since you're so honest, I have to ask.

  11. I don't think it's cruel. It's a surgical procedure done under anesthesia. It didn't hurt then, it doesn't hurt now.

When the puppies were cropped, the breeder had not yet decided which one she was going to keep, which ones were going to be shown by other people, and which were going to companion homes. Cropping is done at 7 weeks, decisions on which puppies will be shown aren't made until they're 8 weeks old.
I initially said I wanted a cropped puppy, because after the devastating loss of Elle, I knew I wanted another Great Dane, but I also wanted the "opposite" so it wouldn't feel like I was trying to replace her. I wanted a fawn male with cropped ears.
In February the breeder contacted me to tell me that she had an uncropped male puppy that I could have. I called her back 24 hours later to say that I wanted him, but someone had already gotten him at that point, so I had to wait another 5 weeks for this litter. And I got a fawn, cropped, male, just like I wanted.

And if you think if I hadn't said anything no one would make a comment, you are very sorely mistaken. People feel the need to tell me regularly that I'm a horrible evil cruel person for getting a dog from a breeder while dogs die in shelters and a horrible evil cruel person for having his ears cropped.

Funny that we certainly don't tell Moms who get their baby boys circumcised that they're horrible evil and cruel, but there's not much difference, is there?

Any other question I can answer for you? Or are you still going back through the archives?
