NYC!

This week I booked a trip to New York for December! I am so excited... I've only been to NYC once before, and I was in 7th grade, so I imagine it'll be a different trip this time.

I got a ticket for cheap and am staying with my friend Paisley Pearls at her apartment, so it will be a cheap trip. Which means I can spend my money on shopping and eating!

Those of you who have been recently - Suggestions for places to shop/eat/drink/sightsee?

  1. I always tell people to eat at Sammy's Noodle Shop. I think it's on 6th and 11th. Either that or 8th and 11th. Best Chinese food ever. I love the egg rolls (huge! And full of shrimp!), and my husband loves the steamed pork buns. Whatever you get, you can't really go wrong. And, bonus, it's cheap. Have so much fun!

  5. UGHHH I AM SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!! Since its in December, you must take a jillion pictures for the rest of us. Tweet 24/7, I don't care. Anyway, last time I went (like 3-4 years ago) some friends and I ended up at brgr, a super delish burget joint, with two locations (on 7th, btw 26th & 27th, and on 3rd, btw 60th & 61st). Seriously, uh-mazing burgers, sweet potato fries, and milkshakes. I think the year we went they won like best milkshake in NYC, or something. They deserved it.

Next, and I'm sure this is not new news, but pretty much anything chocolate at Max Brenner. The dark chocolate hot chocolate. I die!

Also, if you don't go to Canal Street and go into a sketchy back room to haggle for a knock-off bag, I will be super disappointed.

  6. I went 2 years ago and loved it. Although it was quite cold and even snowed. I am from the south so it was a bit of a shock to my system so dress warm. But I loved going to the Top of the Rockefeller Center and Central Park.

  7. I just went in Sept - if you want to see the city, do a double decker bus (weather permitting). It was so fun! If you can score tickets, Book of Mormon was hi-larious! I just wondered around a lot, I like to explore...have fun!!!

  8. I'm a long time reader who grew up right outside the city and spent a semester in college living in NYC.

I think December is absolutely the best time to be there. Of course it is beautiful in the summer, but the energy and feeling around Christmas is amazing.

First off, you should definitely go to the holiday markets especially the Bryant Park market. http://theholidayshopsatbryantpark.com/ Even if you aren't looking for gifts, it is a great holiday atmosphere and there is also ice skating!

Speaking of ice skating, you definitely want to go to Rockefeller Center to see the tree and the ice skating rink. It is crowded and busy but definitely worth it.

To round out the holiday activities, definitely make sure to take a look at all the department store windows.

The other thing I would definitely do is the TKTS line for cheap tickets for a show. http://www.tdf.org/TDF_ServicePage.aspx?id=56 Definitely get there early in the afternoon for the best selection. Another option is to go to the individual theaters and see what they are selling for that night. They will often have pretty reasonable priced tickets for what is left over. I recently got pretty decent tickets for Rock of Ages (which was awesome) for about $45.

Since I've already written a small novel, I'll keep it brief on restaurant suggestions, but one place I recently went to was Sarabeth's which has a great brunch right near the park. It's also near Columbus Circle which has a smaller holiday market which is near to my heart since that is the neighborhood I lived in.

Let me know if you want any more suggestions, and I am happy to send you an email!

  9. Balthazar close to NYU and 5 Napkin Burger on maybe 9th Street. Yummy!

  10. You should definitely try and see a show while you're out there---I suggest Jersey Boys. My husband and I saw it in NY this past summer and it was AMAZING.

Also, try and go to Salon De Ning. It's a bar at the top of the Peninsula Hotel in mid-town. Since you'll be visiting during December, you won't get to enjoy the patio, but they do have some AWESOME views inside and there's some in-door seating =)

    Have fun!
