Adventures in Babysitting

So I've been babysitting for a family that lives close to me for over a month now. I've gotten to know all the kids pretty well at this point, and it's exhausting and great birth control but I actually really enjoy it.

Since there are 3 kids and dad travels a lot, I'm more of a "mother's helper" than a sitter, because a lot of the time the mom is home but just needs an extra adult to run errands, help with homework, pick up at soccer practice, etc.

Yesterday after I did the lacrosse drop off I made dinner and did homework with the boy while the parents went to a work dinner and one of the girls was at lacrosse and the other was getting ready for bed.

I was almost done with dinner when he asked me to check over his math answers.

I look and say "looks good except for that last one."
And he says "that one's right!"
And I said "no look at it again. One quarter plus five nickels plus three pennies is NOT 53 cents."
boy: "yes it is!!!"
me: re-count on my fingers...  "oh, yeah... You're right. Good job!"

Boy: "Are you SURE you went to college?"

And I just died laughing.

Maybe they accidentally gave me second grade math on the bar exam?

  1. "great birth control" ha--yep. I was a nanny for a summer once, and now I teach kids every damn day--kids are frickin' exhausting!

  2. That is hilarious!!! I babysit a lot too, though for much younger kiddos. They're just as funny, nonetheless.

(p.s. the mere thought of doing math gives me a headache)

  3. I babysit for two sets of twin boys, all brothers:) Amazing how quickly they can exhaust you.

  4. Hahha, I love this! Babysitting can be so much fun because kids surprise you with what comes out of their mouths :)
