Show Suggestions!

My mom is coming to visit in a couple weeks. We're going to do the Ovarian Cancer 5k in Chicago (any Chicago friends care to join us? the more the merrier!) and probably go see a show.

I don't go see many shows, and was never one of those theater type kids. I've seen Wicked (pretty good, but really long and I have ADHD), Legally Blonde the Musical (DUH you know I loved it), and Jersey Boys (LOVED x 2).

SO - here are the options:

"Spring Awakening"

The winner of 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical - told by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater through "The most gorgeous Broadway score this decade" (Entertainment Weekly) - SPRING AWAKENING explores the journey from adolescence to adulthood with poignancy and passion you will never forget. The landmark musical SPRING AWAKENING is an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock & roll that is exhilarating audiences across the nation like no other musical in years. Join this group of late 19th century German students on their passage, as they navigate teenage self-discovery and coming of age anxiety in a powerful celebration of youth and rebellion in the daring, remarkable SPRING AWAKENING. "Broadway may never be the same again!" NY TIMES

"Next To Normal"

From the director of Rent comes the most talked about new show on Broadway, NEXT TO NORMAL, winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Score. Alice Ripley who received the 2009 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical, will reprise her acclaimed performance in Chicago. Having been chosen as "one of the year's ten best" by major critics around the country, NEXT TO NORMAL is an emotional powerhouse of a musical with a thrilling contemporary score about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other. The New York Times calls NEXT TO NORMAL "a brave, breathtaking musical. A work of muscular grace and power. It is much more than a feel-good musical; it is a feel-everything musical." Rolling Stone raves, "It is the best musical of the season by a mile. It'll pin you to your seat."

K so who has seen either one? Tell me which one we should see!

  1. While I haven't seen either of these places I'd have to go with Next to Normal, it looks pretty good.

I may be interested in this 5k, odd question but will this be done by the act of walking or running?

  2. I haven't seen either but I heard Spring Awakening was...really bad. And I have plans to see Next to Normal, if that is any vote of confidence.

  3. I have heard good things about both but I am personally dying to see Spring Awakening!

  4. Spring Awakening may be awkward for viewing with mom...there is definitely a graphic sex scene. And frankly just not as entertaining as any of the shows you've seen and loved.

  5. I plan to see both. I've already seen Spring Awakening.

Both have FANTASTIC music. The SA plot is a bit convoluted (teenagers in 1890s Germany haz angst and wonder how babies get made) but it moves along quickly. There is some T&A in the one sex scene (her T, his A) and they reprise it in case you missed the nudity the first time 'round.

N2N's current tour stars Alice Ripley, who originated the role on Broadway and won the Tony for it. It's more dysfunctional family deals with crappy stuff. I'm incredibly excited to see it. And, there's a HILARIOUS song about awesome prescription drugs ("Oh, doctor. How did you know? Valium is my favorite color.")

I wouldn't be seeing Spring Awakening again if my hubby and his friends didn't want to see it. I liked it well enough, but I'd be okay with saving the money on it for another show instead.

  6. I would tell you Spring Awakening for two reasons:

    1. I'm DYING to see it and haven't had the chance yet.

    2. I saw Next to Normal in NYC last year and I loved it (I'm a complete Broadway nerd) but found it to be terribly depressing and one of those shows that you will not stop thinking about for weeks. It's really heavy and pretty dark. I will say if you have a family history of depression or suicide, you will either love it or hate it. We had both and I loved it and my boyfriend's mom HATED it.

That being said, Spring Awakening isn't sunshine and bunnies. Can't wait to hear what you choose!

  9. Amazing music in SA. Loved it when it toured through FL! It is racy in parts and one of the songs is "I'm F@cked". So that should be a clue that it is not your everyday musical!

  10. I loved Spring Awakening. Loved it. But then, I also loved the straight play that the musical was based on. Note: If you're uncomfortable with sexual themes around Mama Fab, you should NOT see this one (it's a "coming of age" tale). It's also NOT a traditional musical. Think Rent/rock opera.

But I've also heard great things about Next to Normal.
