I turn 25 in three weeks... it's exciting, I suppose.
I've never been one to make a huge deal over birthdays - (duh, everyone has them) but this year I'm more excited than usual. Mostly because for the first time in years I won't be studying for finals on my birthday, and 2 weeks after my birthday is law school graduation! YAY!
There is a very big not exciting thing that goes along with this birthday. As of May 1st, I get kicked off of my parents health insurance. Sads :(
So - help me out here peeps. I need to get some health insurance lined up, ASAP. Needs to be cheap and just cover the basics in case I get hit by a bus or my roommate decides he's sick of my shit and cuts my leg off. What's the best deal out there for a non-smoking quarter-lifer?
I went without it until I got my job, but I know the ABA has some decent group rates. If you're a member you can look into that.
ReplyDeletei think being a grown up blows.... ba dumchhhh
ReplyDeletegood luck with the health insurance. i rely on the old - emergency rooms have to take you adage.
yah sorry once i was cut off i waited till i got a job to finally get covered. It's the sucky/scary part of growing up.
ReplyDeletedefinitely look into ABA. i have united through ABA rates and it's pretty affordable and good coverage. it's worth becoming an ABA member if you aren't already.
ReplyDeleteIn NC the Blue Cross Blue Shield plans offer individual Insurance, I would think it would be the same in IL. You should get some, never know what could happen.
ReplyDeleteor you can try catastrophe insurance. doesnt cover dr appointments usually but covers major things that happen (like car accidents)
ReplyDeleteI live in IL and what I did is you can apply for Blue Cross Blue Shield temporary insurance and they gave really great rates to help people in that "in between phase". I mean don't get too excited, because all insurance is ridic, but it was much less than finding even a catastrophic plan through them. Check out applying for temp coverage for sure.
ReplyDeleteHope this Helps!

I would think you can get on your school's insurance, which should offer COBRA until you get a job. That's what I did when I was booted off the parent policy.
ReplyDeletemy hubs has Blue Cross Blue Shield (he's a 26 yr old healthy non-smoker) for $90 a month- but I applied for the same health insurance (I'm a 25 yr old healthy woman) and got denied bc I was in "child bearing age" so I went with my work one instead which was much more $$ :( . When I was between jobs I got Assurant health which was really really good temp. insurance- I think I paid around $120/month (I think you could have it for up to one year). Hope it helps!
ReplyDeletewhen this happened to me, i went to blue cross blue shield of TN and took out an individual plan. to keep my rate low, i opted for a higher deducitble which sufficed until i was able to get insurance through my job at the time.
ReplyDeleteGo to ehealthinsurance.com it allows you to compare rates from several different insurance companies and you can have coverage ASAP! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThe ABA Law Student Division will likely offer health insurance coverage through United Healthcare for up to one year after graduation. They will be negotiating this coverage at the end of April. You may also check their website for details at http://www.abanet.org/join/.
ReplyDeleteShort-Term and Catastrophic Health Insurance
Short-term and catastrophic health insurance policies can also be purchased through www.studentcare.com or www.healthplanone.com. The policies vary depending on the state in which you live, the coverage that you want, and the deductible amount you prefer.
You didn't even mention Cinco de Mayo.
ReplyDeleteABA has health insurance, and I'm pretty sure it's fairly affordable. Definitely check into that. I almost did that, but instead opted to go insurance less for 6 months. I'm still shocked nothing happened during that 6 months!
ReplyDeleteGallagher-Koster has some great catastrophic coverage plans with a spectrum of pricing option that I used when I graduated.
ReplyDeleteAs for getting older, halfway to 50 isn't so bad. It only counts when you start feeling things the 2-day whiplash hangovers from nights that wouldn't have phased you in college. Embrace your last few weeks of life as a student.
At least you have a totally fun set of twins coming to see you for your birthday!! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Early Birthday! I am gonna start driving this year, at this stage in life growing up seems so fun!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in need of health insurance I actually went through my State Bar. I am a member in the law student section and it wasn't too bad for me and the munchkin. Yes, I know I could have gotten State coverage for the munchkin, but I just couldn't make myself made that call or offer up "Medicaid" when I took him to the doctor... I know, Cray me! LOL
ReplyDeletePLEASE DON'T BAIL ON US! Reading ur blog is one of the things i look forward to do everyday.
ReplyDeleteI would look at Blue Cross and Aetna. You can go on their websites and get quotes. I would just make sure the out of pocket max is something you can afford.
ReplyDeleteOh my God - wait until you're turning 36 next week, like I am!! :-) Then "being 25" takes on a whole new meaning!!
ReplyDeleteSorry can't help with the health insurance since I'm not in the US but good luck!

I don't know all of the details, but with the Health Reform bills having been passed, you should be able to stay on the Parents' plan for another year:
