Say NO to the Dress

So I tweeted about this earlier this morning, but I have nothing else to blog about and feel like it's worth repeating...

I love watching wedding shows. I read tons of wedding blogs. I get no greater pleasure than when I log on to facebook and someone has posted wedding pictures - from their own wedding, from a stranger's wedding, whatever. (True Story - December 2008 I had to de-activate facebook until finals were over after I realized that I had spent 3.5 hours going through the wedding pictures of complete strangers).

Why do I love looking at weddings so much? Because I'm wistfully planning my own? Nah, not really. As my friend and new reader L and I discussed recently, I don't really know what I want for my own wedding, whenever that may be. I just know what I DON'T want. I LOVE looking at tacky weddings.
And not tacky weddings like that website that shows brides in camo and grooms with mullets, that's just too obvious. I like the ones that just tried to hard and turn out awful.
I see SO MANY god awful weddings out there... Honestly the wedding of one of my pledge sisters is so awful I just wish I could post it for you guys to see. But I don't want to go STRAIGHT to hell, so I'm refraining.

Side note: Yes, I realize I am a huge bitch. This is not a new development.

Moving on..

So today I'm at the gym and Say Yes to the Dress comes on TLC. I freaking love that show. Again, not because I love the beautiful dresses, but because I love watching the seriously ugly ones that these chicks pick out. Today a girl on the show said "I'm the most beautiful bride I've ever seen!"and I was howling laughing so hard I almost fell off the treadmill.

One designer that seems to be featured on the show ALL.THE.TIME is Pnina Tornai. I'd never heard of her until the show. And now that I think about it, I've never heard of her outside of the show.

Some of her dresses are pretty. But some of them are SO AWFUL I would never let a Pnina Tornai frock (even the pretty ones) near my body for fear of catching something. This one dress in particular just keeps showing up on the show over and over again. DEAR GOD WHY!

thoughts going through my head whenever this dress appears:
WHEN IS SEE-THROUGH EVER APPROPRIATE IN ANY TYPE OF CLOTHING? WHY DO YOU THINK IT'S OKAY TO GET MARRIED LOOKING LIKE A HOOKER? DEAR GOD I HOPE YOU AREN'T GETTING MARRIED IN A CHURCH!!!

A couple more Pnina Tornai gems that make me wanna ralph:

So my final thoughts to you, readers:
For the love of all that is good PLEASE do not pick any of these dresses. or anything similar. But if you do, pretty pretty please send me a link to the pics from your wedding?
XOXO,
Legally Fabulous

  1. it's like the jersey shore vomited all over TLC.

very little is quite as excellent as other people's wedding pictures.

  2. I have totally had the same thought about these dresses!! I LOVE that show and all shows wedding related but I would be just as happy going to the justice of the peace if I didn't believe my mother would never forgive me and then come back and haunt me. I digress, whenever I've seen this dress picked I'm always horrified!!! I too think "please tell me you're not wearing that in a church". I too can spend hours on FB going through other people's wedding pictures. Another place that's awesome for this is photographers websites and blogs, in Charlotte we have several and I love looking through their pictures.
When you have no access to FB at work you learn how to be creative when it comes to taking "mental sanity" internet breaks!

  3. I barely noticed the monstrosity that is the first Pnina dress (I've never heard of this line and that's probably for my own good) because I was distracted by her TAN. And crazed facial expression.

Trust that when I get married it'll be something classic. And NO BUBBLE HEMS.

    Bitches unite!

  4. Yeah, there's a short one that has the sheer bodice that does not look like a wedding dress at all. In fact all of the sheer dresses scream eighties to me.

  5. Hahaha I think I vomit every time I see one of the Jersey Shore castoffs putting on a Pnina and oohing and aahing over it. Regardless, I'm hooked on the show.

  6. Agreed! What's worse are the mothers who ENCOURAGE the skimpy dresses. Are you really proud your daughter looks like she forgot to get dressed...on her wedding day?!

  7. OMG I am peeing my pants laughing at this. I agree!!!

I think my fave was a high school classmate that posted pictures of her wedding on facebook. Two words: purple. tuxedos. I am so not joking. They matched the purple flowers, purple (hideous) bridesmaids dresses, the purple tennis shoes the bride was wearing, and the purple candles. I love purple, but woooowwwww. Overload!

  8. THANK YOU!!! I love SYTTD, and I actually met Ronnie, the owner, at an event my company was having, but those Pnina dresses are HEINOUS. I remember the first time I saw one and was like WTF is that?? Oh lord. Awful.

  9. oh my gosh! I almost bought that 3rd dress...but my mom said she would not pay for it because she could see my belly button through it.

  10. ps.
I am kidding. I really want to go to a tacky wedding though!!

  11. hahaha you are not alone. i'm right there with you with these dresses. see through corsets? really?!

  12. I love looking at wedding pictures and secretly love "good ideas gone wrong" tacky weddings! "Say Yes to the Dress" is such a fun show, but I agree that the dresses are either beautiful or horrible. And those Pnina Tornai see through ones are the worst! I simply do not understand why so many girls 1) try that on, 2) think "I look awesome!", and 3) think see through is appropriate for anything, let alone a wedding. I was watching it last week and there was a woman who was well in to her 40's who bought one of those gowns. It was so wrong.

  13. & generally the girls picking out those awful dresses ARE from jersey! I feel like the designer had that whole hot mess of a state in mind when she started the whole see through wedding dress. Yuck, yuck & super duper tacky!

  14. Totally with you on the Pnina's...while she has a few that are decent, these monstrosities definitely take the cake. And I really can't believe anyone buys them.

    ReplyDelete
  15. haha!! This made me laugh. I had never heard of Pnina until the show either. She's got a whole slutty yet pure thing going on here. I saw one girl wearing the first dress you posted and she was a few months pregnant. I guess the jig is up anyway!

  16. I thought I was the only one! I go to UT Law in Knoxville a 2L here was on the show! Remember the girl who was in a wheelchair and got the train attached on the back... Yep I know her. I felt semi famous once I realized it was her, but then felt really bad for thinking for more than two seconds about what she could feel below the waist on her wedding night if she was paralyzed when I saw the episode before I started law school.

  17. My Mom and I watch that show all the time waiting for the brides to pick out the pretty dress. They never do! :P

  18. my gpa would probably be a bit higher if it weren't for those damn wedding albums on fb. whenever i know (and i say "know" not as in i am friends with these ppl, but just bc i've seen on fb previously that they are getting married like that weekend) someone has just gotten married i will begin stalking for pictures of the wedding. and if there aren't any pics on the bride or grooms pages then i will start stalking their friends whom i think may have put pics of the wedding up.

and i realize that i will probably get blasted for this but...i despise, with all my heart, red white and black weddings. vomit. i can't think of anything worse...ok picture this...a bride in a stark white wedding gown from david's bridal and her maids in black satin, bride has bouquet of red roses (i also hate red roses) and maids have like something withe baby's breath and sparkles added in. ohh and then the guys wear rented black tuxes with red satin vests.

side note, i just realized i was making a scowling face at the computer while typing.

anywhoo about SYTTD, i crack up over the ppl who work there. that one lady who has jet black hair and wears it in a super high, slicked back pony and has chola eyebrows. gross. if she suggested a gown to me i would reject it on principle alone.

  19. You're hilarious!! I also love weddings that try so hard to be good but are oh soooo bad. (Save me a spot in H*ll!) Playing fashion police is a spectator sport at weddings. Love this post.

  20. Bahah my friend and I were talking about this show the other day and were making fun of this dress.

Did you notice the price tag on it--close to $10,000 to look like a hooker.

My fav: the trashy jersey shore woman who cries and whines like a baby on the show until her mom caves in a buys it for her so she can be "the star" in her wedding.

    ReplyDelete
  21. YES!

A girl showed up at a prom dress with a see-through corset style and I thought she was a HUGE slut (the VERY young principle told her she was the prettiest girl at prom BARF), I can't even imagine someone wearing them to their wedding. GAG GAG GAG.

    ReplyDelete
  22. yes. They are horrible.
Oh and it's not just you . I have been married for over a year and am still a nosy Rosie when it comes to looking at others wedding photos.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I've only heard of her on the show, too. I'm pretty sure she's their "select designer." I looked at her dresses and hate almost all of them. A girlfriend of mine wore a see through one for her wedding and it just looked like "trashy barbie." BUT there is one dress of her's that I LOVE..have it saved to my computer and everything, ha!

    ReplyDelete
  24. those dresses are horrible. who gets married looking like hooker barbie?

    ReplyDelete
  25. OMG I was talking about this with a friend before I started watching the show too because I heard they were so awful. Someone my colleague knows even bought one of those dresses. They are so trampy and trashy and expensive, that's the worst!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I could not agree more with everything you said!!! You are right on and I love you "bitchy attitude" because it's not really bitchy just honest :) Your blog is refreshing because you are not always so fake and happy go lucky!

    ReplyDelete
  27. OMG I love looking at (more like making fun of) people's weddings from high school. I always feel better when b*tches in high school look like crap! One of the girls I know wore a tea-cup style dress with red lace all over it. BARF. I love SYTTD too. Pnina is a train wreck. I don't like a single dress she makes. Everyone is right. Anyone who buys one of her dresses is either from New Jersey or want to look like trashy barbie.

  28. Love this. Those dresses are truly heinous. (I think all women love to judge others' weddings. It's in our DNA.)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Some of those dresses are so god-awful- I wonder what these people think when they look back at their wedding photos 10 years from now...

    ReplyDelete
  30. I can't wait to wear this dress when I get married in June. I mean that's just so rude of you to put this on your blog. I also have a red sash and a red rosette. Sata(i)n is my flower girl.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The Pnina dresses are AWFUL! My daughter and I love the show but we call the see-through Pnina brides "Stripper-Pole Barbies".

    ReplyDelete
  32. sorry but I really have to disagree. I think the pnina tornai dresses are gorgeous and any one of them would be my dream dress for my own wedding. I find usually the women that don't like these dresses are the ones that can't pull them off in the first place.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I love Pnina Tornai gowns and if the bride asks for it they can be lined. She makes each gown custom for the brides.

    ReplyDelete
  34. haaahaha, this is awesome. I love your rant, I was just thinking of these dresses and I've been watching this show on NetFlix. I got married in August and I like to look at the girls and just see what else there was. I still like the dress I picked best, and it was less than $600! [thank goodness for locally owned mom and pop shops!]

I'm so glad you think the Pnina's are ridiculous though, a hooker wedding was not on my agenda either!

    ReplyDelete
  35. So I was watching Say Yes to the Dress and I had to google something like "ugly say yes to the dress dresses". B/c I saw one of these heinous (yes, i used a thesaurus for that one) dresses. I love your post and I'm glad I'm not the only one who sees the problem with this! Who needs ANY part of your wedding dress to be see threw?!?!?!?! I also found this blog, and I have to quote one part, "*I’m sorry if you think this is lovely and all, but what the eff was she smoking when she designed this?" And here is the link to the dress that blogger was referring to: http://shinyprettybits.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Pnina-Tornai-11949-large.jpg

  36. Did you see the episode where the bride got boob enhancements just so she could pop out of her PT dress even more? And yes, at a church! I can't figure out how the wedding night attire became appropriate for the ceremony.

    ReplyDelete
  37. These dresses are gorgeous. I think most people are stuck in the traditional, and conventional ways. In this generation people are more open minded and less conservative. If a bride wants to choose a sexy dress rather than a conservative, typical old-school dress then she should- whatever makes her happy. Also, maybe the older women are intimidated by sex appeal. This is not trashy, it's just more fashionable and less boring.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I Love Those dress, but they are not church appropriated.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love these dresses and I am sorry to all of you ladies that have a problem with them but maybe it is because you have self confidence issues with your body and it is suppose to be your wedding not your mothers so if you feel good in the dress who cares what your mother father or for that case anyone else thinks about the dress if you yourself feel good in it go with it

    ReplyDelete
  40. Well, I must disagree with some of the comments. I love these dresses, actually. They're gorgeous! It's not that they're trashy or anything. It's a new generation, new fashions. It's not the "traditional" wedding dress. It's beautiful and daring!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Hello, I have just come across the first dress via your blog and must say I adore it and am happy you introduced me to the designer. I really do not understand your view about not wearing it in church and being a christian myself do not recall the bible ever stating 'Thou shall not wear lacey attire in church'? Adam and Eve were naked their whole relationship or dressed in leaves! Anyway that aside I will be wearing a similar dress when I get married and think you need to understand people will dislike your chosen dress and you will dislike others, we are all individuals with our own taste which makes life more interesting! When you do get married upload your dress to here and watch the various opinions stream your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with Marsh. I personally love hooker dresses. The lacier and sexier, the better.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Adam and Eve were naked until sin was created. Which leads me to believe that being naked in a church is likely frowned upon by God.

I'm pretty sure God hates these dresses too.

    Because they are ugly....as sin.
