Fashion Do's and Don'ts

Last week I attended a "What Not To Wear" Fashion Show hosted by the Chicago Bar Association and some other people/organizations. I recapped it for Above The Law - check it out here!

My friend Tim's response:

"that's a funny article.  didn't know there were so many rules in law offices.
i would totally have been the slutty girl lawyer"

  1. "there are a lot of married men in law firms, you don't want to tempt them" - my favorite quote. hahaha maybe i DO! i kid, i kid. but why the hell should i worry about tempting them? sounds like a personal problem that they should address.

this sounds like it was a depressing event. so we can't look feminine? however, i HATE HATE HATE red shoes. don't know why. actually, i do know why...bc dumb sluts like to wear black strapless mini dresses with red patent pumps (from wet seal) and red patent belts (probably also from wet seal) and like to top it off with red hoop earrings. nasty.

  2. "ATTRACTIVE NUISANCE: The chorus of female attorneys added some caveats: make sure your suit is not too fitted, wear flats, wear minimal jewelry, wear minimal makeup, do not wear hair in a pony-tail, do not wear hair down in a distracting way, wear pantyhose, do not wear open-toe shoes (especially in front of a jury says Justice Goldgar), do not wear peep-toe shoes, and do not wear dark nail polish (avoid burgundy, cautioned Professor Collins). Wear a shirt under your suit that is not too tight, not low-cut, not bright colored, not patterned, not ruffle-y, and not too feminine. Finally, when going on a job interview, do not carry a recognizable brand-name handbag because you are trying to project the image that you need money. Oh, and do not wear your engagement ring if it is large because it may anger your women interviewers and cause jealousy (and perhaps rage)"

This paragraph blew my mind! Wear flats?! Don't wear pink? Basically the shirt under your suit has to be a white or black button down? This woman is insane! I agree with a lot of what she says, but she basically wants female lawyers to be as plain, ugly, and doubty as possible! You can absolutely look feminine and professional in the law field, trust me.

  5. I will never wear flats.
But, I also will never wear a low cut v-neck to the office.
    So...maybe I'm halfway ok?
However, I love love LOVE interview time on campus. The 1Ls who choose to wear 4" stilettos with skirts that don't even skim the fingertips make for some good people watching. And yes, Stacy & Clinton would have a field day.

  7. Okay. I disagree about wearing pink or patterned shirts under suits, especially if you're wearing a black suit.

I don't agree that you can't wear peep toe pumps, although I wouldn't in front of a jury and between the months of October - May.

No low cut (unless you have a camisole underneath), no gaudy jewelry (big earrings hurt after a long day anyway. I wear a lot of pearls), and no dark nail polish. I stick with light pink or nude on my nails... I'm kind of over the whole french manicure thing.

Honestly, I've seen some pretty trashy get ups in court, which always makes me laugh. I know that, in a business casual setting, I wear a lot of dresses and skirts, but always tastefully. However, sometimes they are brightly patterned (in the summer anyway). Other than that, just wear a lot of black and you're good. Plus, it's slimming. Yay!

  14. Used to work in a big Philadelphia Firm....was always amazed and some of the get-ups of the young female attorneys.
Have my own shop now and wear jeans everyday that I am not in court!
Good luck in school...remember most of what you need to know about practicing law is not taught within 20 miles of a law school lecture hall.
