Weigh-In Wednesday

Confession: This weigh-in actually took place yesterday, since I knew that I would be out last night drinking and eating and such.

This week I FINALLY had a good loss. WHOOO! Who knew that not skipping workouts would pay off?!

This week: -2 pounds
Total since January 2009: -13 pounds
Total since August 2009: - 7 pounds

My trainer was so proud of me he brought my Halloween candy! Haha. Only 1 fun size piece though... too bad. That 1 piece was delicious though!

Of course now that I've lost 2 pounds this week, all I can think about is Giordano's stuffed spinach pizza... mmmmm.
But don't worry... I am staying strong! Since I'm going to Champaign this weekend I will be doing enough drinking and eating Friday and Saturday to last me for a looong time. No need to get a head start on all the WW points I'll be consuming!

Now in other news - I have made some BIG plans! Well, big for me at least. My friend over at It is Everlasting has inspired me! I have decided to start training for a 1/2 marathon! Ah. (To my real life friends who read this blog - I hope you did not just die from a heart attack). I have professed MANY times that I HATE HATE HATE running, so I'm not even really sure WHY I want to do this... I guess just to challenge myself and prove that I CAN do it? And to give myself something else to work towards in my work outs besides the numbers on the scale?

So in order to start my training, I am following the Couch to 5k plan and am going to run the Turkey Trot 5k in Dallas on Thanksgiving Day.

Yesterday I did Week 5 workout 2 of the Couch25K (C25k), which is:
- 5 minute brisk warm-up walk
- 8 minutes jog
- 5 minutes walk
- 8 minutes jog

I actually did it relatively easily! On the last 8 min jog I even stretched it out and jogged for 10 minutes. (I know for you experienced runners out there this sounds totally pathetic... but I am NOT a runner, so it's pretty impressive for me!) Tomorrow I am going to spin class, so my next C25K work out will be Friday, and I'm supposed to jog for 20 minutes straight. I'm not gonna lie... I'm pretty nervous about this. I don't think I've ever jogged for 20 minutes straight in my life... even in high school when I was playing basketball and working out like crazy.

If I am able to successfully complete the Turkey Trot 5k, I will start training for the half. I am going to try to run a 1/2 in Hawaii in February. One of my good friends from undergrad is now playing basketball at Hawaii Pacific University, and I was planning on going to visit him in February anyway, so I am going to try to time the visit to be the same time as the 1/2 marathon there. I found a 12 week 1/2 marathon training program online that I'm going to attempt to follow... Not gonna lie, when I look at it right now, I get frightened. But I have about 16 weeks as of right now to train, so i think I'll be okay.

Now, for all you runners out there - any advice for me as I begin this training journey? Any gear that you guys use that you find especially helpful or not helpful? I am thinking about getting a heart rate monitor... my trainer suggested Polar. I think they have some without a chest strap, which is what I'd prefer, but I wanted to ask if you guys use one and what you think. Also - do any of you use Nike+? What do you think about it?

Exciting Things!

Since my last post was a bit of a Debbie Downer, today I have decided to write about the exciting things going on in my life!

Tonight I am going to the "Night of 100 Drag Queens" at Sidetrack, a gay bar in Chicago.
One of my best friends works there, so he got me a ticket. It benefits Equality Illinois, which is an organization that works for equal rights for members of the LGBT community in Illinois.

This is the 17th annual "Night of 100 Drag Queens", which 'showcases the talents of both amateur and seasoned performers in a hilarious revue filled with wild, wacky and outrageous routines.' I have never been before, but I have heard that is is hilarious and am so excited!
Don't worry, I will take LOTS of pictures!

One of my friend's is having a pre-party starting at 5:00 PM, then we're going to another bar at 7 because they're previewing their new menu for dinner, then heading to the show at 8. I'm really excited for the pre-party at 5 though... this friend is a pretty high-up VP at Diageo, which is the company that owns almost every major drink brand in the world (think Bailey's, Smirnoff, Johnny Walker, Guinness, Captain Morgan, Cuervo, Tangeuray, Dom Perignon, Ketel, Ciroc, etc.). He gets a RIDICULOUS "allowance" of booze each month, and always has the most ridiculously stocked bar. He has been known to break out $500 bottles of wine when he has people over, so I'm SUPER excited to go to his place before the show!

And this weekend, I will be going down to Champaign for the Illinois vs. Michigan football game. Unfortunately I realize that the Fighting Illini are one of the worst, if not THE worst football team in the NCAA, but I still love going to games!

I have a good guy friend (who is not dating one of my best girl friends) who played football for Illinois when we were in college. He is from Champaign and his parents always throw huge tailgates that are SO much fun. I am so excited to party with them on Saturday! It's a 2:30 PM game and it's supposed to be 57 degrees and sunny, PERFECT tailgating and football weather!
I am going to be taking Elle Woods with me... she LOVES tailgating!

Do you guys have anything exciting coming up this week/weekend?!

XOXO

Sunday Night Depression

Is it just me, or does anyone else get a case of depression every Sunday night?
I realize I slept, drank, and ate too much all weekend, didn't get any work done, and that I have a TON of work to do for the week.
I have a couple of things to work on for my clinic, lots of reading to do for my classes, and just general laundry, grocery shopping, work out type stuff that I need to get done. Ugh.
I was complaining to my friend about this via gchat earlier...

N: how's it going?
me: not good
I'm stressed.
N: about what?
me: life
N: alright
just a general shambled sunday stress?
me: yeah
pretty much
N: always fun.
don't you have episodes of intervention on your dvr for occasions like this?

It's true... I love watching Intervention when I'm stressed out about my life. It's always perfect that it's on on Monday nights because that's usually when I'm feeling really guilty about doing too much partying/not enough studying. I watch it and remind myself that I'm being overdramatic and my life is TOTALLY together. Yeah I might be a little behind on my reading but it's nothing to freak out about.

I actually don't have DVR, but you better believe I''ll be tuning in tomorrow night to get my weekly dose of crazies.

Anyone else have a case of Sunday Night Depression this week?

Total Asshole...

So I was sitting in class earlier, and a friend g-chats me. She knows I sit next to our friend (we'll refer to him as X for bloggy purposes), so she says:

Friend: "Lean over and hug X right now for me."

So of course, without hesitation, I lean over and give X a big ole hug in the middle of class. I look up mid-hug and our teacher is staring right at me.

God only knows what he thinks that was all about... I'm such an asshole. Whoopsiessssss....

Weigh-In Wednesday

Bad news this week... GAINED 1 pound. Ugh.
I'm not surprised though... I only worked out once and ate garbage while I was in Orlando (even if it was only for 2 days), and then didn't do cardio on Monday or Tuesday because of my headaches.

This week: +1
Total since January 09: -11
Total since August 09: -5

This is getting ridiculous - time to get my butt in gear! I have a doctor's appt. tomorrow morning to talk to her about my headaches... I need to get those under control. And tonight I am going to do 60 min. of cardio before I go to bed if it kills me (and it just might).
Howeverrrrrr I have had a couple people ask me in the last couple days if I've lost weight, so that's exciting! Unless they are people who found the blog and only noticed because it had been pointed out to them. Ha.

Hope everyone saw the scale go in the opposite direction this week (well, everyone who was trying for it to go that way!).
XOXO

Housewarming Gift Suggestions...

I have had a headache on and off for the last couple of weeks, but today it was ON. It was so terrible, I had to skip a meeting with my professor to go home and lay down. I tried calling my doctor to schedule an appt, but their office was closed. Closed at 3:00 on a Tuesday? I want to be a doctor, they never work!

But anyway, due to my pounding head I have nothing exciting or witty to write about today.
However, I do need some suggestions!

I am going back to the ole stomping grounds this weekend for my sorority's initiation. One of my friends from my pledge class has a little sister who is a freshman, so we're going down for her initiation. I am staying with a good guy friend of mine from college. He just bought a new condo, and I want to get him a little (emphasis on little, I'm broke!) gift as a "congrats on your new place" / "thanks for letting me stay with you" gift.

So - Anyone have advice for what to get a 25 year old single guy who does NOT drink? (Otherwise I'd obviously just go with a nice bottle of whiskey or something)
All suggestions are appreciated!

Christmas list!

Hope everyone is having a good Monday so far! I struggled getting out of bed this morning... and so did Elle! She is so funny... she hates waking up in the morning even more than I do.
Of course I missed my bus by like three seconds, and it took the next bust like 10 minutes to show up, and then I had the slowest bus driver EVER... even though I left a couple minutes earlier than usual I was 5 minutes late for class. And I sit in the front row. What a way to start a week, right?
Anyway....

I need some help from you guys - my grandmother is already asking what I want for Christmas!!!
It's so weird to be thinking about Christmas gifts already, but I'm sure it will be here before I know it. I try to only ask for "practical" things... for example last year I got a new coffee maker (loooove my Keurig!), a steamer, and a waffle iron. Okay so maybe those aren't really practical (no one really NEEDS a waffle iron, but I LOVE cooking breakfast!), but you know what I mean.

This year Elle Woods has already made her list (new nail clippers and Petco gift certificates are at the top!), so I need to work on mine. Unfortunately I can't just say "hey granny, I'm broke, can I have some cash?", so I have to think of ways to get the things I would spend the cash on in the form of a gift (hellooooo Starbucks, Target, and Petco gift cards!).

I was talking to a classmate on Friday and he speaks several languages... I am SO jealous. What an awesome skill that I totally do not have.
I had like 12 years of Spanish classes (grade school through high school) but hardly know ANY Spanish. I could kick myself for not caring and blowing it off! I really do want to learn Spanish. It's a valuable skill for ANYONE, but especially someone who is from Texas and wants to end up back in Texas eventually. So, I'm thinking of asking for Rosetta Stone for Christmas!

So here's my question for you guys: has anyone used Rosetta Stone? Is it worth it? It is SUPER expensive, so I don't want to ask for it unless it's something that really works and that I really will use! Knowing my proclivity for procrastination (did I use that word right? I hope so... I really like it), is it something I'll actually use?!

Also - any other suggestions for Christmas gifts for a soon-to-be law school graduate and dog mom?

Have a great week!

Arkansas at Florida

My friend Sarah is in Florida today for the Arkansas vs. Florida game... my brother and a couple of his friends also made the trek to the Swamp to see the game. I'm sure they had so much fun at the game, and I know my friend and her boyfriend (who flew down from Chicago) are enjoying the warm weather!

Let me preface this by saying that Sarah is one of the girliest girls I've ever met, and pretty much knows nothing about football (or any other sport for that matter). She did date a football player in college so she knows enough to pay attention to when the people around you are cheering so you can cheer too, but she's hardly a college football fan. Her boyfriend loves football however, and really wanted to go see a game at Florida, so she got him tickets.

I got this text this morning from her, and had to share it because it made me laugh so hard.

"On the way to the Florida-Arkansas game! What's their call? Sooweewoopwhoopwhoop?"

Hahahahaha!
Sad that the Hogs couldn't pull it out in the end, but what a great game!
Woooo Pig Sooie! Go Hogs!

Twitter spam

Hey everyone!
Quick question...
I was getting like 10 twitter spams a day, so I made my twitter so you have to request to follow (seriously, SO annoying)... the only twitter buttons I can find for blogger are the ones that show your latest updates, and since now my twitter is by request only, it asks for a password when you get to my blog. Anyone know where to get a twitter button that doesn't show updates? So annoying.

Alright, I'm off to take Elle to the dog beach and to do some stuff around the house... it's a wreck. I'll write more later!

Weigh-In Wednesday

Not much to report today... I was pretty bad about working out this week.

This week: Lost .5 pound
Total lost since January 2009: -12 pounds.
Since August 18, 2009: -6 pounds.

Man, how's that for slow going?

I go to Orlando tomorrow and Friday for my clinic case. I will be back for the weekend so hopefully I can get some good cardio in this week and lost more than half of a pound. Christmas card pictures are rapidly approaching!!!

Today's Walk...

In case you were wondering how Elle's walk went tonight... here is your answer:

+

=

A very very angry Dog Momma.

And no... I did not step in Elle's crap... someone else didn't pick up after their dog and I stepped in it while walking her. GRRRRR. And I was already grumpy before that happened.

Check me out...

Hi Everyone!

It's me, Elle Woods, back by popular demand!
I know that a lot of you out there think I'm pretty cute, and you're right! So I've decided to share some videos with you so you can see just how cute I was as a puppy (REALLY CUTE!), and how awesome I am now that I'm an adult!

This first video is me as a CUUUTE puppy. It's kinda dark, but you can see how cute I am!
video

This next video is me and my sister Lola playing in the snow when Mom was watching us one day. We have SO much fun together.
video

And here is me, playing in the snow. You can hear mom laughing at me when I ran into the snow bank. Personally I do not think it was that funny. Just cute!

video

Oh and I want to send a shout-out to my friends Charlie and Max! Their parents think I'm pretty cute (duh!), and my mom thinks they're pretty cute too. I wish we could meet some day!
You can read about Charlie's mom here: http://it-is-everlasting.blogspot.com/. Charlie is TROUBLE, and I like it!
And Max's mom blogs over here: http://www.mintjulepsandmagnolias.blogspot.com/. Max is one of the most handsome boys I've seen in a long time. (Charlie is very handsome too, I just don't think he's big enough for me! I like my men beefy!)

Also - mom needs some advice. As those of you who follow her on twitter know, the two of us are having Christmas card pictures taken in a couple of weeks. A lot of you guys share pictures of yourself on your blog... Mom is a little nervous about doing that. She likes remaining anonymous. She says it's easier for her to write snarky things about dumb people that way. BUT she would also really like to share our pictures with you guys! What are your thoughts about being anonymous vs. showing pics of yourself? Or some of you who are still technically "anonymous" but DO show pictures of yourself? Hmmm... what a conundrum!

K hope everyone had a good Monday. I am still pooped from three days of doggie daycare this weekend, so I slept a lot. Sleeping is good.

XOXO,
Elle Woods

Today's Trainer Session...

Had a good session with my trainer this afternoon. I love working out with him because he was my friend before he was my trainer, so we just gossip the whole time. I was having a crappy day today, didn't want to work out, and today was the day that he decided it was time to UP my weights. UGH! I was dying. At one point we were doing pendulum lunges with 10 pound weights (good-bye 5 pounders, I'll miss you!) and this conversation took place:

Me: "You're going to make me cry today!"
Mario the Trainer: "That's fine, I'll wipe your tears in between lunges.
Now KEEP GOING!!!"

Ha!
I'm leaving in the morning for Fayetteville, Arkansas, for the weekend to visit my brother and go to the Arkansas-Auburn game on Saturday. Go Hogs! Luckily they are moving to a new apartment in the morning, so I should be safe from any intruders!

I won't be posting this weekend, but you know I'll be tweeting all weekend! Follow me!
I'll! also! be! using! lots! of! exclamation! points!!!!!!! (sorry about that. yiiiikes)

XOXO

Weigh-In... Thursday?

I skipped Weigh-in Wednesday yesterday. I told my trainer it was because I slept late and didn't have time, but really it was because I stepped on the scale yesterday AM and didn't like what I saw. Ha.

Today was a little better, although not much. However, in the last week - I did not work out with my trainer at all, and only did cardio on my own twice. I also drank like a fish (surprise surprise) this weekend. So all that being said, I'm not upset with today's result.

This week: -.5 pound
TOTAL: -11.5 pounds

Still a LONG way to go to my 30 pound goal, but I'm trying not to get frustrated!
I have one month til Elle Woods and I have our Christmas card photo shoot (Thursday, November 6th!), so I really want to get to at least 15 pounds lost by then.

How did everyone else do this week? I know a lot of you have been doing the 30 day shred... how is it going?!

Going to have a TOUGH workout with my trainer this afternoon for the first time in 9 days... say a prayer for me! haha.

XOXO,
Legally Faaaaaab

Robbery Update

A quick update:

The head robber in my brother's apartment break-in (new readers catch up on that here and here)
had a hearing in front of a federal magistrate today....

(side note - my brother's girlfriends mother is a prosecutor in Arkansas, and she has been putting a lot of pressure on the prosecutors in this case to really go after him)
She went to the hearing this morning and then sent my mom the following text:

"NO BOND. Judge found him to be danger to the community if released. He is detained in US Marshal custody without bond."

Hooray! I'm not sure what's going to happen with the other three, but this guy was apparently the ringleader and the one with all the previous arrests, so we're very excited he's in jail. I hope he stays there for a long time.

XOXO

Sweet Home Chicago

I was twittering about the HORRENDOUS wind we're having in Chicago tonight and a couple of the girls asked for apartment pictures, so for those of you who are into that sort of thing, here you have it:

The reason I brought up the wind - I live on the 52nd floor of a high rise so when the wind is bad (as it is OFTEN in the winter) the whole building sways. I've literally seen the water in my toilet swish back and forth. A little scary, right? Well tonight is one of those nights and the walls and windows are creeeeeakinggggg. Luckily I'm a heavy sleeper (and so is Elle Woods!) so it doesn't really bother either of us.

I'm used to living on the 52nd floor now (I've lived here since I started law school in August '07), but my ears still pop on the elevators sometimes. Not all the time though, which now that I think about it is kinda weird.

For the most part I LOVE where I live, but there are definitely drawbacks to highrise living. Example #1 - housebreaking a puppy when taking her out involves a trip down the freight elevator, through the parking garage, and out to some gravel because there is no grass nearby.
Example #2 - when she wakes up at 4AM and has to go out and it's -10 degrees and snowing so thick you can barely see (yes, it's happened. several times).
But like I said, I think the pluses outweigh the minuses.
My parents actually bought my place (long story short - my dad is a homebuilder and thinks that renters are a drain on the economy. HATES renting. So I will live here until they decide to sell and I'm on my own, which hopefully won't be for a while), and I live here with a roommate (it's 2 bed 2 bath, so it works out fine).

Now for the fun part:

Starting off - my bedroom. Notice the pics on the wall above the bed - I had Andy Warhol-style photos done of a picture of myself. I love them... all my friends make so much fun of me and say "You would". Haha. Yep, and I did.

Up next - master bath (my bathroom). Honestly I don't think I can ever get married. How will I share a bathroom and closets with a man?! Haha.

And as you can see on the floor - there is where weigh-in Wednesday takes place. :)
I am OBSESSED with my shower because when I'm showering I can see through the bedroom out to Lake Michigan I love it. (always shower with the door open otherwise Elle freaks out and would bust it down to get to me. She has a littttleeee bit of separation anxiety!!)

Here is my pic of the Dallas skyline that's opposite the shower (you can see the corner of the heated towel rack on the left. Let me just go ahead and tell you - DUMBEST invention ever. God knows why the previous owners had one installed.)

A closeup of my beloved Big D:
And this is framed on a wall in my bedroom :)
Here's my closet (after a SERIOUS cleanup)

Up next - the breakfast nook. I had my friend's husband come over and do some handywork for me. There was a ceiling fan above the table before and I didn't like it so I had him put in a light fixture (some of the pics still feature the fan, ick).
(also - notice the snack tower filled with fruit snacks. I heart costco.)

Finished! (the red fake flower arrangement in the foreground was made by my mom. She is SO crafty and awesome).

Finished light fixture and view. I love to eat breakfast and watch the sailboats on the lake in the late summer. beeeeyoooootiful! :)

Living room: Ordered this rug from Target.com and I loooove it. I've spilled all over it and it shows nothing, and I like the contrast against the white leather (NOT my first choice - I got hand-me-down furniture!)

This is the only pic I have of opposite the couches. You can see my goofy ass guy friends and my 1990's big screen TV. Haha. I spent my "new tv fund" on a new Gucci bag, so I'm stuck with that baby forever now. :)

This is an old pic of the kitchen from the ppl who lived here before, but it still looks pretty much the same (except I have a cuter rug now!)

The mini wall between the kitchen and living room holds a dry erase board where my drunk friends doodle

And a few last shots of the view on a pretty day

Elle Woods looking out the window on a winter day
And my fav. pretty sunset shots
Had to throw this one in bc it's hilarious....

updates

Thank you so much to everyone about your concern for my brother and his super scary situation.

Here's an update:
As more information comes out, the worse it gets. It turns out that the kid who was the ringleader has had SEVERAL situations on campus before.
He was arrested in 2008 for first degree criminal mischief, making terrorist threats, and felony aggravated assault. in an altercation involving a traffic accident with an Arkansas football player.
He was arrested AGAIN in May 2009 with FIFTEEN POUNDS OF MARIJUANA, and firearms. He had a hearing this morning in front of a judge but I apparently that was only related to the charges from May. He is still in jail and will have a hearing about the burglary of my brother's apartment. When they arrested him he had illegal drugs (steroids, pot, etc.) and illegal firearms on him. They are charging him in federal court.
I can't believe this kid has gotten in all this trouble and is still in school! How are people like this still out on the street?

There were 2 other guys involved (1 is still in jail, 1 posted bail), and one girl. Apparently the girl was the getaway driver. It actually turns out that she is a sorority sister of a family friend. What are the odds of that?

So anyway - that's the latest on that. I am going to visit my brother this weekend for parent's weekend and to go to the football game. I hope to God he's moved into a new apartment by then! Otherwise I will be snuggling up in between my parent's at their hotel room, haha.

Keep your fingers crossed that the judge does not give him bail.

Back to motion writing...

Scary Thursday

Those of you who follow me on twitter already know this, but I'm going to explain a little further here.

I had a text message from my mother at about 7AM that my little brother (who is a senior at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville) was at home asleep around 2AM in his apartment when three guys with guns broke in and held he and one of his roommates (the 3rd roommate was at his girlfriends place) at gunpoint and robbed them. My brother said he woke up in the middle of the night with the barrel of a gun in his face. I am freaked out just typing it. They got him out of bed, and made him lay on the living room floor with a gun to his head while they made his roommate open up his safe with the gun to his head.

Some police officers just happened to be driving by as they saw the guys running out of the apartment (thank God!) and caught two of the guys right away.
My poor brother is SO freaked out. They had to go to the police station right away and file reports and all that, then they had the crime scene unit at their apartment until almost noon today. They stole my brothers ipod and all his cash and whatever was in his roommates safe.

My mom texted me at 9:15 tonight and said they caught the other two guys. It turns out they're kids from the Dallas area, so the police initially thought that my brother was actually somehow involved. Luckily they figured out quickly that he had no idea who these assholes were.

My brother's girlfriends mother is a prosecutor in Little Rock and knows the State's Attorney in Fayetteville that's going to be at the arraignment in the morning. She's going to call and make sure they ask for high bail.

I just feel SO bad for my brother... he's seriously SO freaked out. Luckily he and his roommates were already planning on going home to Dallas for the weekend for the football game at Cowboys Stadium, so they don't have to stay there for the weekend. They are going to be moving to a new apartment ASAP. I can't imagine trying to stay there.

As someone said on Twitter earlier... it's time like these that it is SO important to remember what is important in your life. It's not the stuff you keep in your safe, it's the people in your life. I am so thankful that they're okay.
Everyone remember if, God forbid, you're ever in a similar situation... THINGS can be replaced. People can never be replaced.

Hope you all have a good and SAFE evening.

XOXO
