So at my super awesome law school, as part of the legal writing classes first year, you have to take a test over the bluebook at the end of 1L year.
Yes, you read that right.
It's absolutely f'ing ridiculous.
It's actually really hard too. You're allowed to have your bluebook with you, but the test is really long so you're scrambling through the pages you've tabbed to find the rules, the test is actually worth a lot of points (which is weird because you'd thinking in a LEGAL WRITING CLASS you'd be graded on your LEGAL WRITING, not your ability to furiously flip through the f'ing bluebook), and it's at the end of the semester when you have more important shit to do (hello studying for classes that actually matter?!).
SO anyway, last night I received this gchat from my friend who is a 2L and just about lost my shit.

Patrick: there's a 1L who is planning to outline the whole bluebook over winter break
me: omg
WHAT
i'm going to kill him.
who is he?
and what's his home address?
SERIOUSLY?
I know the test is stupid, and it's a pain in the ass, but do you REALLY have nothing better to do over break?!
and do you not have enough to do right now that you've actually had time to think ahead to next semester and what you're going to do over your BREAK from school?!?!?!
Someone PLEASE take this kid out for drinks.
We had something similar at my law school except it was a test on the ALWD manual, which is even lamer than the Bluebook exam because pretty much NO ONE USES ALWD IN THE REAL WORLD and we all have to learn how to Bluebook or some other style manual eventually. I asked admin why we used ALWD and they replied "because it's easier to learn Bluebook once you know ALWD"... so why don't we just learn Bluebook from the get-go?!
ReplyDeleteOh my. Seriously, drinks are in order.
ReplyDeleteDrinks for this child? No.
ReplyDeleteTime for him to be taken out to pasture. And left there.
OMG this kid has too much idle time! S/he is going to burn out way too quickly...but it kind of makes me laugh (:
ReplyDelete::sending him 3 virtual shots::
ReplyDeleteHow sad. We had that test too at my school. Such a joke.
ReplyDeleteWe actually had a RESEARCH test, for legal writing. Along with a six week research course, with quizzes each week. We were the first lucky class to get the "benefits" of this new program. I just want it to be winter break! And no, I won't be doing ANY extra work over break! We have already been assigned an entire book to read for Civ Pro. Hoping we won't get many other assignments...
ReplyDeleteMuahahaha! Xoxo-BLC
ReplyDeleteOMG 1Ls....hahahahaha!
ReplyDeletei hate the damn bluebook. i basically failed that exam and asked the professor in front of the entire class why we needed to be memorizing a reference book. just stupid.
ReplyDeleteps glad to see that i'm not the only one who isn't getting much studying done! i just took a two hour nap. i have an income tax exam at one tomorrow. no codebook allowed. as if i would actually memorize tax code. i think not!
