It's day 2 back at school and I've had some random thoughts I'd like to give you 1L's.
Chill the fuck out.
There. I said it.
I feel much better already.
Next up -
STOP crowding and shoving your way into my classroom the second our class is over so you can get in place for your torts class. It's annoying. You're annoying. What's your damn hurry?
And the 1L's that were lined up throughout the entire hallway FORTY MINUTES BEFORE THEIR CONTRACTS CLASS YESTERDAY?!?!?!? I don't even know what to say to you, except GET AHOLD OF YOURSELVES. There are enough seats for everyone, I promise. You don't even know anyone yet, who are you going to try to save a seat for?! I felt like I was going through an obstacle course to get to the bathroom. Totally unnecessary.
Also - Dooney and Bourke is ugly. Stop using it as a school bag. Stop using it ever. Barf.
Your sequined flats are ugly too. Stop wearing them.
And to the 1L boy that is walking around the library in baggy jeans, white sneaks, baggy tshirt, sideways baseball cap, and a FAKE DIAMOND EARRING:
I don't think there is enough room here for me to say what I want to say to you.
Take your earring out. Wear some clothes that fit. You're a big kid now. In three years, you're actually going to be a lawyer. No one (I hope!) is every going to hire you with that shit in your ear. You are not Eminem. You look ridiculous.
Wow, that was pretty snarky, even for me.
I'll finish up with some nice advice:
Just breathe, you'll be fine. Go have a drink, you need it.
XOXO
AMEN! Amazing post--I second everything you said! And to add my own piece of 1L advice--STOP OUTLINING AND TALKING ABOUT OUTLINING. You have have one--ONE--full day of classes, you have nothing to outline yet and would just be wasting time if you even tried. Ugh 1Ls...did we annoy the 3Ls this much when we were 1Ls? I hope not!
ReplyDeletehaha I totally agree with everything you just said, and I could probably add to it ten fold but it would end up as one big BIG snark fest.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree on the Dooney and Bourke! & school rage is all the fashion now-a-days. Let it rip! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome... as a 1L myself, I totally agree with you. I earned a graduate degree and had a few "real" jobs before starting law school this fall, and the 22/23 year old overeager 1L's are so annoying!
Although I'll admit, I was irritated that on the first day of Torts, when I arrived 15 minutes early to find that all the front seats were filled. I had to sit in the last row, and then was informed by the prof that we weren't allowed to move seats all semester. I'm stuck in the back. It ruined my day. Sad and pathetic, but what can I say, I'm a 1L!!!
:)
Crap does that mean I have to retire my D&B purse??
ReplyDeleteTee hee. I have considered passing out brown paper bags for hyperventilation. I sure needed one last year! Xoxo-BLC
ReplyDeleteI am peeeeeeing my pants!!!! Seriously, I just wanted to shake them. Even later in the semester I'd still see them crowded around the door. Christ alive! Get over yourselves!
ReplyDeletesomeone showed up to my office for an interview in cutoff jeans.. yes interview in cutoffs.. seriously! people are so strange!
ReplyDeleteHAHA...loved it ;)
ReplyDeleteHa. I'm a 1L, and found this quite amusing.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to when most of my classmates calm down and realize no one is going to fail out the first week.
I'm loving your advice!!
ReplyDeleteThis was great - I remember those days all too well (and how scared I was as a 1L) and how wonderful my 3L year was! Hope yours is great!
ReplyDeleteI love that you say exactly what you think without apologising for it. Keep it up!
ReplyDeletejust found your blog.. I'm a 1L.. and reading some of your older posts from '08 even has made me feel better.
ReplyDeleteI tell my NLS friends (non law-school) that I feel like I'm doing it wrong. I don't spend all weekend living and breathing school, I don't hyperventilate, and I certainly don't rush to sit in that cold big sterile Torts room any earlier than necessary.
reminds me of being an upperclassmen in high school and the freshmen who would congest the halls near their symposium room and would herd together like cattle. or being a senior in undergrad and seeing the masses outsid BOH98, the massive lecture hall on campus.
but we all grow out of it. :)
